How a Gate Valve Provides Pipeline Isolation

Turning the handwheel, or an actuator rotates the stem and it moves the gate away from or towards the seats. In the open position, the clear flow passage reduces turbulence. During closing, the wedge or discs make contact with the seat rings to isolate the pipeline.


Gate valves are selected when the system requires:

  • Full-bore pipeline isolation

  • Low pressure drops when fully open

  • Bidirectional shutoff where the design permits

  • Manual, electric, or pneumatic operation

  • Service across large pipe sizes and pressure classes

The valve should be operated through its full travel. Holding the gate partly open can expose the seating surfaces to high fluid velocity, vibration, and uneven erosion.

Gate Valve Designs Available

  • Rising Stem Gate Valve

The stem moves up when the valve opens, in a rising stem gate valve. This provides a visual indication to the operator of valve position and ensures that the threaded portion of the stem is not in the process medium. There should be sufficient vertical clearance over the valve.

  • Non-Rising Stem Gate Valve

The non-rising stem does not move up and down. The gate travels along the internal stem threads, creating a compact arrangement for buried pipelines, valve chambers, and installations with limited overhead space. 

  • Pressure Seal Gate Valve

A pressure seal gate valve applies the pressure of the internal line to enhance the ability of the body to seal against the bonnet. It is intended for use in high pressure and high temperature applications like steam headers, isolation valves in boilers and power plant piping.

  • Double Disc Gate Valve

A double disc gate valve uses two parallel discs that move against separate seat rings. This design provides parallel seating and is suitable for selected process and pipeline applications where dependable isolation is required at lower differential pressure.
