It is required to prevent product contamination or where it is compulsory to remove essential equipment from service for cleaning or repairs while the unit continues in operation.

The block valves should be examined for the onstream isolation of equipment if the fluid is flammable or if it is in high-temperature service. The motive of the bleed valve is twofold. First, it ensures the upstream valve is tight before slipping in a bind off the downstream block valve.  Second, it also permits the safe withdrawal of moderate leakage from the upstream valve to again the tight shutoff of the downstream valve.

The double block and bleed valve can perform the task in three separate valves- two separate isolation and one drain valve which apart from being hugely space saving can also save on weight and time due to installation and maintenance practices needing much less work.
