It derives its name from the wing-like disc, which is the key component responsible for controlling the flow. A butterfly valve consists of a circular disc or plate mounted on a spindle within the pipe. The disc is positioned in such a way that it rotates a quarter turn (90 degrees) to control the flow. The valve can be actuated manually using a lever or gear mechanism, or it can be automated with electric or pneumatic actuators.
In the open position, the disc is rotated 90 degrees, allowing the fluid to flow freely through the valve. To close the valve, the disc is rotated back to its original position, perpendicular to the flow, effectively blocking the passage of the fluid. Butterfly valves can be adjusted to various intermediate positions to control the flow rate precisely. In automated systems, an actuator is used to control the valve remotely, based on signals from a control system.
